Dwayne Johnson is one of the biggest stars on the planet, but even he feels small after Rampage. If you want to be larger than The Rock, you’re probably going to want to play the Rampage video game after the movie. Don’t worry - we’ve got you covered.

The arcade game Rampage released in 1986 and was pretty standard for the era: you play as one of three giant monsters (actually real people transformed by a mysterious serum) and aim to destroy all the buildings in various cities. King Kong from the ape’s perspective (the main icon of the franchise was even a giant gorilla, named George), it proved a hit and appeared on pretty much home console going at the time. There were copious remakes and reboots of the years, but the core gameplay has remained the same.

So, if you’re going to play Rampage, you’re going to want to go for the first. How do you do that? There are lots of emulators for all versions of Rampage out there, but for the best - and legal - version you want to go to the makers themselves, Midway Games.

Midway are behind Mortal Kombat, Defender, and, of course, Rampage. Knowing that much of their output is ungettable on modern computers, the company released Midway Arcade on iOS. Costing $0.99, the app includes Spy Hunter, Rampage, Joust, Root Beer Tapper, Defender, and Arch Rivals. Further bonus packs include NARC, Total Carnage, Gauntlet, Gauntlet II, and Wizard of Wor. This is currently not available for Android.

Those seeking out Rampage for the first time after seeing the movie might be in for something of a surprise. Although the movie is built around creature-feature city destruction, the comparisons are reference-deep, with the story behind it totally different (no, you don’t get to play as The Rock), with a very different method enlarging the monsters. That said, the changes the movie makes benefit the story at hand, and long-standing fans are sure to not be bothered by the changes given the clear affection in the recreation.

Whether, like the original game, Rampage the movie spawns a big franchise is unclear. If box office predictions are anything to go by, though, don’t be surprised if you’re sitting down to watch Rampage Through Time in a few years.
